HUNDREDS of local residents embraced the community spirit at the annual summer fete in St John's.

St Johns in Bedwardine Parish Church holds the popular fete each year, and estimates that this year's instalment raised around £3,000.

Highlights of the day included a dog show, as well as an appearance from Empire Dance Academy and a special craft village in the church.

A zumba flash mob also took place, with a barbecue provided as well as refreshing 'mocktails', whilst a number of charity stalls were scattered across the church garden.

The events team arrived as early as 6.30am to help set the event up for an 11am start.

Tracey Ward, part of the St Johns in Bedwardine events team, said: "When you see all these people that have turned up from the local community it makes it all worth it.

"Lots of shopkeepers have come up to us and told us that it makes St Johns like it used to be.

"We are continuing to work hard to create a village in a city feel for the area, by bringing the church and the community together.

"It has been steadily busy and I think everyone has really enjoyed it.

"I would like to thank all the local shops and members of the community that have donated, but it is as much about community as raising money."

Ms Ward was joined by the rest of the community events team - Sandra Nash, Ellen Little and Catherine Temperton - in running the event, and says they are always looking for new volunteers to join them and help out.
