A TENNIS club has backed a Droitwich mum's £20,000 campaign to get the town's courts resurfaced.

Elaine Newman has kick-started the drive to bring the old tennis courts in Droitwich Spa Lido Park back to life for residents to use this year.

Tennis has been played in the park since the 1920's but in recent years the surface has started to deteriorate, causing a drop in the number of people using the courts.

Now Droitwich Tennis Club has lent its support to the campaign, which is already backed by Wychavon District Council.

Neil Bates, chairman of the tennis club, said: "Tennis is a great sport for people of all ages and is fun to play. Get your hands on two rackets and a ball and you're off provided you can find somewhere to play.

"This project will give free access to courts for many years to come and what Elaine is trying to achieve is fantastic."

The mum-of-two said: "It's great to have the tennis club on board as their help and enthusiasm for the sport will be invaluable to making the project a success."

The tennis club is one of the largest sports clubs in the town with more than 360 members.

The campaign is already well underway, with Wychavon District Council pledging 50 per cent of the cost already.

But fundraisers still need to find around £20,000 towards the overall £40,000 cost to resurface all of the courts, providing a facility for years to come.
