A MAN has been cut free through the roof of his car following a head-on crash near Bidford-on-Avon this morning (Friday).

A Vauxhall Vectra and Seat Leon crashed on the B439 Cranhill Corner at 6.30am.

One of the cars had left the road and was in a ditch, with one casualty trapped inside.

The other car was still on the road and all passengers had managed to escape the car.

Crews from Bidford and Alcester worked for over an hour to remove the roof and safely assist West Midlands Ambulance staff in moving the trapped man.

He was thought to have suffered a broken arm but all involved were taken to hospital to be checked over fully.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival, crews discovered two cars that had both suffered significant damage in the collision.

“The driver of one of the cars, a man believed to be in his 20s, was trapped as a result of the damage suffered by his vehicle.

“After ambulance staff had assessed him, they worked closely with the fire service to free him. Once the roof and door had been cut away from the car, a specialist extrication device was used to safely get him out.

“He was treated for a fractured arm and a back injury as well as cuts to his face.

“Pain relief was administered at the scene and the man was immobilised before being taken to Worcester Royal Hospital.

“There were two women travelling in the second car.

“The driver, a woman believed to be in her 30s, was treated for abdominal and back pain whilst the second woman was treated for minor injuries.

“They were also transported to Worcester Royal Hospital, both travelling on the same ambulance.”

A spokesman from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue said: "Excellent joint work between Warwickshire Police (traffic management incident investigation), West Midlands Ambulance (casualty care) and ourselves to make space to safely release the casualty."

Officers from Warwickshire Police are still at the scene of the collision.

Two ambulances and a community paramedic in a rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene.

The road is expected to be closed for several hours while investigative work takes place and has caused traffic problems in the surrounding area - particularly on Grafton Lane and Wixford Road.

People are advised to avoid the area.
