WHEN we arrived at this pretty country pub it was full of customers tucking into their food.

We were very hungry, so found a table and browsed through the menu.

I was spoilt for choice, and much to my partner's dismay, took ages to choose. I finally opted for the classic prawn cocktail (£4).

The prawns were fine but the sauce was a little disappointing being somewhat sticky and gooey.

My partner struggled to find a starter he fancied, so he opted for melon with prosciutto ham and a chilli and coriander salsa (£3.95).

He said the melon was sweet and juicy and the chunky salsa had a real kick. However, he would have liked a little more ham. For my main course I was torn between the wide selection of fish on the specials board and sun-dried tomato and pesto linguini, with parmesan and rocket (£6.50).

I chose the latter but was a little disappointed - it was good, comfort food, but lacked flavour.

My partner opted for chicken Monte Cristo with gruyère cheese, with a generous portion of chips and peas (£8) from the specials board.

He said the creamy filling oozed out and was complemented by a cranberry sauce.

The desserts were out of this world.

I opted for the chocolate brownie and ice cream (£3.75) - heavenly for any chocolate lover, but unfortunately my partner thought so too, and he dived in for several large spoonfuls.

He chose the lemon cheesecake with lemon drizzle and cream (£4) from the specials board and was determined not to share any of it.

He said the creamy cheesecake was sensational, light with a zesty sauce which "tingled on the tongue".

There were other words of praise for the outstanding service. The bar staff were very friendly and our waitress truly delivered exceptional service with a smile.

We were also pleased with the bill, which came to a very reasonable £45.10, including two glasses of wine and soft drinks. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at The Nightingale and would definitely go back.
