A LEISURE company in Leigh is to be allowed to create a third fishing lake.

Malvern Hills District Council has approved planning permission for the additional lake, which will include 40 pegs for anglers, at Brockamin Pools, Leigh.

The development means there will be pegs for 115 anglers at the lakes.

Leigh Parish Council had expressed concerns about the "wasteful use of valuable water supplies for recreational use", in view of climate change and the history of the existing lakes requiring topping up in the summer.

There were also three letters of objection, which listed concerns about increased traffic, disturbance to nearby properties and litter.

Malvern Hills planning officer Simon Jones said: "As angling is a passive activity, your officers consider that the expansion of the existing use would not harm the quiet enjoyment of the countryside by others, and that there would be no adverse impact upon the residential amenity.

"The fishery comprises two lakes, both of which are lined with clay and have islands within them. These provide significant wildlife habitats.

The provision of an additional lake has the potential to create and enhance the habitat for wildlife from what is an agricultural field."

Members of the council's northern area development control committee granted approval for the lake at their meeting on Wednesday.
