A POLICE investigation is continuing after a suspected arson attack on a disused Worcester nightclub.

The former Zig Zag club in Malvern Road, St John's, went up in flames on Thursday.

It has now been bordered up by contractors acting on behalf of owners Sainsbury's.

A spokesman for Worcester police said: "Obviously we are investigating what happened.

"If anyone was in the area prior to the fire being discovered we would ask them to contact us."

The blaze, which completely wrecked the roof of the building, was tackled by 30 firefighters and five fire engines.

Brendan Connolly, manager of Worcester fire station, said: "We've put it down as a fire that was started deliberately.

"Once we were happy the fire had been put out the owners got an agent managing the site to board it up.

"It's a good idea that has been done because it is unsafe inside and most if it will have to be pulled down."

Jamie Cowen, Sainsbury's regional development executive, said: "Sainsbury's priority was to make the building safe and secure and this was carried out on Saturday, June 2.

"As a result, a structural engineer was then able to conduct a full assessment as to the extent of the damage caused by the fire. We are now awaiting the engineer's full report."
