THE president of a Worcestershire art club has called for the careful preservation of a stone carving over the entrance to Malvern Library.

Catherine Moody, from Malvern Art Club, said the carving should be made a prominent feature of the library as part of its extensive refurbishment.

She said: "Evidence is emerging that this cartouche (ornamental tablet) was designed by Alfred Drury, a leading sculptor of the 1900s responsible for the winged figure on the war memorial outside the library, and Arthur Troyte Griffith, an architect and friend of Edward Elgar.

"This could be very important and the council should ensure it is carefully preserved and made a feature of so that people can see it and appreciate it more."

Worcestershire County Council, Malvern Hills District Council and Malvern Town Council are jointly funding a £79,000 revamp of the library. The plans include opening up the site to give more prominence to its Italianate facade and the war memorial.

Miss Moody said: "The dramatic three-arch facade surmounted by its carved stone cartouche needs attention and I hope this will be part of the plans."

A spokesman for the county council said that the refurbishment plans aimed to preserve and enhance the historic features of the library and its grounds.

Margaret Gray, the county council's principal economic development and regeneration officer, said: "The development of the grounds will enhance the major improvements that have already taken place inside. It is expected that the grounds can be used by local people as a versatile public space."
