CYCLISTS of all ages and abilities are signing up to take part in the third Macmillan Elgar Bike Ride across Worcestershire.

The event, which is sponsored by Malvern-based QinetiQ, and takes place on Sunday, June 10, follows a route passing a number of places associated with composer Sir Edward Elgar.

Three routes will start and finish at the University of Worcester in Henwick Road.

Organiser Jon Rayner said: "The Macmillan Elgar Ride is fast becoming a regular early-season date in the cycling calendar, because of the beautiful scenery through which all the alternative routes pass in the lee of the Malvern Hills.

"We have riders from as far afield as Dorset coming. The two longer routes of 28 and 52 miles are quite tough in parts, so they are a genuine challenge, but well within the ability of most weekend cyclists.

"There is a Macmillan Lite 15-mile option for the more occasional rider, with the Fox Inn at Monkwood Green as a convenient refreshment point.

"We are very fortunate to have the generous support of Malvern technology company QinetiQ, which is paying for all the overheads, so that all the money raised will go straight towards supporting people affected by cancer."

Riders taking part will be given a free safety check at the start, water and refreshments on the way and a massage for tired legs at the finish.

They will also get a medal and a free goodie bag thanks to the Worcester Choose How You Move campaign.
