Julian Lloyd Webber thrilled an audience in Worcester Cathedral with a performance of Elgar's Cello Concerto as the highlight of the events to celebrate the 150th birthday of Worcestershire's favourite son.

Joining him for a special gala anniversary celebration was the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra It was the first of two performances of the Cello Concerto on Saturday for the 56-year-old cellist. The second was in the Royal Albert Hall, London, the same night.

He rushed from the cathedral concert straight into a helicopter waiting on the King's School Field which flew him to London.

It was the first time the musician - brother of composer Lord Lloyd-Webber - had performed at two separate locations with such restricted time constraints.

He said: "The concert at Worcester Cathedral was marvellous - it was packed. There was a unique atmosphere, absolutely magical."

The anniversary has been celebrated throughout the county. Malvern's Fringe Elgar Festival included dozens of events such as poetry, music and drama games.
