WAR veterans will gather at Worcester's Cathedral Cenotaph to mark the 63rd anniversary of D-Day this week.

The city's Royal British Legion has announced while they are unable to parade through the city on the day, Wednesday, June 6, they will be marking the event with a wreath-laying ceremony.

The commemorative event, which will take place from 10.45am at the Cenotaph - is open to anyone involved in the war effort, legion members and anyone wishing to pay their respects to those who lost their lives on the Normandy beaches.

President of the Worcetershire RBL, John Hewlett, who was a chief petty officer in the Navy, said it was an important day for them. "We hold a service every year to remember the chaps and our shipmates that didn't come back," he said. "We lost terrific amounts of men. We should remember that they lost their lives for us."

Mr Hewlett hopes more than 60 people will attend the service, but he wants to attract a few more on the day.

"It's a bit of world history, and we hope it will never happen again. It is a very big occasion for us," he said.
