A POPULAR novelist brought classical elegance to the glitz and glamour of Ladies Day at Worcester Racecourse.

Jilly Cooper was guest of honour at the Betfair Ladies Day at Worcester Races on Saturday.

She said: "My horse Monte Salvo is running; it's the first time I've seen it race."

Ladies Day has supported St Richard's Hospice for the last five years. One of the hospital's most important patrons is Jim Lewis, who lost his wife Val in 2005 to cancer soon after his racehorse Best Mate, the three times winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, died on the course at Exeter.

Mr Lewis's granddaughter Georgie Lowell won the Best Dressed Little Lady. Beti Jones won the Most Elegant Hat and Claire Webster won the Best Dressed Lady.

Jenny Cheshire, Pitchcroft corporate hospitality manager, said the event was a mini-Ascot, growing year by year in stature.
