A DRIVER had to be cut from the mangled wreckage of his car after it overturned and landed on its roof.

The accident happened in Hylton Road at about 1.15 today.

The driver emerged bloody and bruised from the crash even though the roof of his car was so badly crushed the steering wheel was pressed against the road.

Firefighters spent 20 minutes cutting him from the wreckage of the grey Audi following the collision.

The driver received cuts to his arm and head and was given oxygen at the scene.

Amy Ugarte, aged 21, and Matt Bostich, aged 26, who live opposite where the crash happened provided a chair for the man to sit on while police and paramedics took his details.

Firefighters had to cut the back door off and cut part of the front door off to gain access to the man, tilting the seat back to pull him out.

The road was closed and sealed with police tape and the county air ambulance arrived but was not needed.

Witnesses John Rogers and Shaun Hodson said the Audi, which was travelling north along Hylton Road, had clipped a parked car and landed on the windscreen of a black Honda travelling in the opposite direction, although the precise causes of the accident have yet to be confirmed by accident investigators.

Mr Rogers said: "The car came a metre and a half to two metres off the ground. It came down upside down on the bonnet of the other car. There was a big thump. The other driver, the one in the black Honda, was struggling to breathe."

The road is still closed.
