AN APPRENTICE butcher in Worcester is celebrating after scooping a top award in a national sausage-making competition.

Tristan Meier, who works at Craig Saunders Butchers in St John's, achieved the runner-up prize in the speciality category of Orient Gold Ltd's Worshipful Company of Butchers Guild annual awards.

He received a trophy and £100 for his pork, herb, garlic and onion sausages, which scored highly with the judges. Orient Gold is a training provider based in Ilkeston, which specialises in qualifications for the butchery sector.

Assessors work with butchers to help them gain the NVQ and apprenticeship qualifications they need to progress in the trade. The qualifications are funded by the Learning and Skills Council in conjunction with the Meat Training Council.

A spokesman for Orient Gold said: "We organised the competition to encourage young butchers to be involved in their trade and enthusiastic about their jobs.

"Sausages always taste better from the butcher rather than the supermarket and all local butchers have their own special recipes. This was the ideal opportunity to show them off."

The competition took place at the Sleep Inn on Pride Park, Derby, and there were a total of 42 entrants.
