THE task of raising £100,000 in two years for a community centre refurbishment is not for the faint-hearted.

It requires passion, power and persuasion - and Sheila Grantham has these in great quantities. And that is why the 73-year-old former mayoress of Pershore is nearly halfway towards her target in just over a year and is completely convinced she will reach her goal.

She is driving force behind the appeal to rejuvenate St Andrew's Community Centre, Church Walk - a former church and one of the oldest buildings in the town.

The chairman of St Andrew's management committee and of the St Andrew's Trust is passionate about the 12th century building. It is one of the few halls in the town, and has not only established itself as the cornerstone of community activities, but also provides a meeting place for numerous groups and societies. It is also used for practice sessions by the Abbey bell ringers, offers changing facilities for choirs and orchestras performing in the Abbey, and has a tea room. Since launching the appeal last year, the trust's bank balance has gone from virtually nothing to £11,000, and a grant of £15,000 has come in from Wychavon District Council.

Severn Waste Services has promised to chip in £10,000, and Mrs Grantham is expecting an application to the Awards For All arm of the National Lottery to yield another £10,000.

Apart from these major contributions, individuals have come up with donations ranging from a few pounds to £1,000, as well as a new cooker for the kitchen. There have also been an array of fund-raising events from coffee mornings to concerts - all organised by local people.

With nearly half the appeal funds secured, the electricians will be moving in during June. The next job will be to fit a totally new kitchen.

People wishing to donate can send a cheque made payable to St Andrew's Parish Trust, the Appeal Office, The Vicarage, Church Street, Pershore.
