Britain is a sporting nation almost without rival. This, after all, is the country that invented the holy trinity of football, cricket and rugby and whose soccer league is one of the biggest in the world.

Unfortunately, the closest many people get to sport these days is about 10ft - the distance between their sofa and the TV screen.

While our sporting heroes show off their athletic prowess and hand-eye co-ordination on the pitch, the only parts of our body we exercise on a typical bank holiday are the fingers that operate the remote control.

Events such as yesterday's Sport for All event in Droitwich are designed to change all that.

The day was arranged to showcase the huge variety of sporting activities available in the area.

Even if you spent your school games lessons leaning against the goal post or lurking around the boundary hoping the ball wouldn't come your way, there's a sport out there to tempt you off your sofa - even if you don't know it yet.

Maybe squash is your thing. Perhaps you have a hidden talent for water polo. But the point is you'll never find out until you try.

We're constantly being told to do more exercise, and most of us agree with the message. However, translating those words into actions is a different matter.

That's where Sport for All comes in. It shows us that there is a way of getting the exercise we need for our health in a fun and sociable way.

Maybe you went along yesterday and were inspired into signing up for a team or taking lessons.

If not, go along to your local leisure centre and find out what you can do.
