AN ONLINE directory of traders has been launched to help tackle the problem of cowboy workers.

The Trader Register contains details of local builders, plumbers, roofers, central heating workers and electricians who have agreed to abide by the Trading Standards code of practice.

Traders who breach the code may be suspended and investigated and, ultimately, removed from the register. The plan was created in response to public demand for Trading Standards to help people find honest traders.

The Citizens Advice Bureaux (CAB), Age Concern and local home improvement agencies will also offer advice to people using the register, such as if they are entitled to financial help for work on their homes.

Derek Prodger, Worcestershire County Council's cabinet member for environment, said: "This directory is fantastic as it leaves the rogues in the cold and helps support our honest local traders.

"Although this service cannot provide a complete guarantee for work being done on your home it is a step in the right direction."

More information is available at www.worcestershire.gov.uk/traderregister or by calling the Worcester shire Hub on 01905 765394.

One-stop shops, CAB and Age Concern will also be able to search the register for people. Traders interested in signing up should call 01905 769394.
