BOXING and basketball were just some of the sports being sampled at a bank holiday fitness bonanza.

Grey skies failed to put a damper on spirits at the Sports For All day at King George's Fields in Droitwich yesterday.

The event, organised by Wychavon District Council, was a chance for people of all ages and abilities to sample rugby, boxing, football, tennis, shooting, martial arts, archery and athletics.

The sporting extravaganza, which was open to anyone, gave people a chance to find out more about the sporting and fitness opportunities on their doorstep.

Jem Teal, community development manager for Wychavon, said: "This was a great opportunity to get both young people and adults involved in sports, get active and most of all, have a great time."

Joe Ling, Droitwich area partnership manager, tried the tug-of-war and said a five-a-side football tournament proved a big hit with youngsters.

"We suffered a bit with the weather but the archery, basketball and air rifle shooting proved popular. It was mainly young people at the event but there was a good mix of ages. It's the first time we have had an event like this. We might try it elsewhere, in Pershore or Evesham. The idea is to get people active."
