A DOG owner in Worcester is upset the driver of a car didn't stop after they ran over her pet.

Samantha Hayward was alerted by passers-by that her dog was badly injured following the accident.

Max, a 15-month-old German shepherd, escaped from a garden in Canterbury Road, Ronkswood, on Tuesday, May 22, at 2pm.

Mrs Hayward and her husband Nick had only recently bought the house and had not yet had time to fully secure their garden with fencing.

"People who saw it said my dog let off a massive scream when he was run over which caused them to look," said 20-year-old Mrs Hayward.

"Luckily he survived but he needs an X-ray and about 15 stitches on his right paw."

The driver hit Max in Newtown Road. Mrs Hayward has notified the police of the incident.

Mrs Hayward said two witnesses had come forward, but in the confusion she forgot to ask them for their contact details, and they were unable to tell her more about the car or driver.

"If it wasn't for the witnesses who saw it, picked him up and brought him to me I would never have known and he would have been left lying on the side of the road," she said.

"What shocked us both was that the driver just drove off and didn't care to stop."

A police spokesman said the driver of the car was legally obliged to stop and report the accident under the Road Traffic Act.

He said that while police didn't have a description of the car as witnesses said the car drove off very fast, they were appealing to the driver or any other witnesses to come forward. South Worcestershire police can be contacted on 08457 444888, quoting reference number 677S/220507.
