Jo Dowling has stepped down from her job as receptionist and reprographics manager at the Worcester Diocesan offices.

However, the decision is not so much a retirement but moving on to another busy period in her life.

In fact, she has so many interests outside her work, it's a wonder she's had time for a full-time job.

But she has been greeting visitors with a warm smile and helpful approach when they call in at the Old Palace in Deansway, Worcester, for the past 19 years.

Mrs Dowling, aged 65, who lives in Dines Green, Worcester, moved to the city from Portsmouth with her husband Michael 20 years ago when he retired from the Royal Navy.

She soon secured a job in the diocesan offices because of her experience with reprographics. "It has had its ups and downs like everything, but I have always said it is an enormous privilege to work in the reception. You meet so many people and deal with so many situations. It is so varied - no two days are the same.

"It has its moments. You get people who are rude or drunk but I have enjoyed the contact with people the most. It is a wonderful building and I love the gardens and the view across the river."

The Old Palace is not just the Worcester Diocesan headquarters , it has a restaurant open to the public and rooms that are hired out to outside bodies like the College of Technology and the Open University for exams. Everyone files through the reception to be greeted by Mrs Dowling.

Mrs Dowling has been involved with the Girl Guides for 40 years, is a Mother's Union trustee and deanery co-ordinator for Martley and Worcester, a school governor for St Clement's School and treasurer for Churches Together in Worcester-shire. She also makes greeting cards for charity and enjoys cross stitch.

Apart from continuing all of these activities in her retirement she plans to do more gardening, visit many attractions such as Ironbridge and Slimbridge, spend more time with her four grandchildren and do voluntary work at Acorns hospice.
