TWO wooden bridges built as part of the work to breathe new life into Worcester's Diglis canal basin have helped scoop a major prize for civil engineering excellence.
Diglis won the sustainability category at the Institution of Civil Engineers West Midlands Annual Awards in a ceremony at Millennium Point, Birmingham.
To retain the historic character of the basin, British Waterways installed the two new timber swing bridges and reinstated a collapsed basin wall.
Awards panel chairman John Blakemore said: "Diglis basin is a well-presented class act. It shows an innovative, sustainable approach while being attractive and sympathetic to the area."
The project's contractor was Morrison Construction, which worked with consultants Arup and sub-contractor T Nielsen.
