A SCHEME to stop businesses from using household waste sites illegally has proved successful, according to Worcestershire County Council.

Since April, residents visiting the council's sites with commercial vehicles and trailers have been required to apply for a free permit.

The scheme aims to prevent council taxpayers having to pay for the commercial waste left at household tips while still allowing people who use commercial-type vehicles, braked trailers or non-braked trailers over 1.3 metres (4.3 ft) long to visit the sites with household rubbish. More than 5,000 permits were requested after the scheme was made public in January and that figure has nearly doubled in the last month.
