AN energetic grandmother is gearing up for her ninth Race For Life in memory of her late husband.

Jill Tyrrell will take part in Worcester's Cancer Research UK event in June with her daughter Jane Annis after losing her "soul mate", 68-year-old husband Mick, in 2003.

She said he realised he had symptoms of prostate cancer after listening to a radio programme during National Prostate Cancer Week.

"He thought going to the loo so often was just part of getting older," said the 71-year-old, who had been married to her husband for 33 years.

Following a visit to the doctor, Mr Tyrrell was diagnosed with both prostate and bone cancer.

The grandmother of 11, of Tyrrall Street in Barbourne, Worcester, said although it was too late for treatment, he battled on for two years.

"He was the bravest person," she said. "He really didn't make a fuss. Nobody would have ever known he had it until the last few months.

"He didn't let anyone see he was suffering and carried on as normal until a couple of months before his death. His spine just disintegrated - that is the only time he had to give into the pain."

Mrs Tyrrell praised the support of staff at Worcester's St Richard's Hospice, who cared for her husband in his final months. She also thanked the people she works with as supply community warden at Worcester Community Housing for their donations.

Her daughter is taking part in the event for the fifth time.

"It's all girls together," said Mrs Annis, aged 41, of Bishops Avenue, Worcester.

She paid tribute to her father's bravery.

"He was always there if you ever needed advice," she said.

"Through the whole time, I don't think I ever heard him complain. He just dealt with it and lived as best he could."

The 5km Race For Life will start at 11am from Worcester Racecourse on Sunday, June 10. To enter visit www.raceforlife.org or call 08705 134314.
