MORE than 30 jobs are to be lost at a printing company in Pinvin, near Pershore.

Polestar Varnicoat says it is having to make the cuts because one of its customers is not giving it enough work.

However, bosses say it is only a temporary measure.

Managing director Alan Fraser said the company is only using three out of its four presses at the moment so a proposal has been put forward to make 33 redundancies at the premises in Terrace Road.

He said the majority of jobs lost will be to printers but a few administrative jobs are also set to go.

"We have about 500 people who work here so 33 jobs is a relatively small number and we hope to achieve it through some natural wastage," he said.

Mr Fraser said although it was sad the job cuts had to be made, it was a "sensible step" that will ensure the business's long-term future.

He said: "It's not just the people who work here it effects, but the families too.

"Pinvin and Pershore are small and it will affect the economy but it should be seen as an interim measure because we will grow back. The market is still a bit slow and hasn't bottomed out.

"The company is going through a transition from being very dependent on one company to a mixture."

Mr Fraser said his firm depends on News International - the Rupert Murdoch-owned parent company of the Sun and Times newspapers - for 88 per cent of its business, but is looking to reduce that dependency to 60 per cent in the next two years.
