THE WIFE of a former Mayor of Droitwich has said her husband is lucky to be alive after he was rushed to hospital suffering from a blood clot on the lung.

Kate Spencer confirmed husband Terry had suffered a massive pulmonary embolism caused by blood clots in both legs and had not had a heart attack as announced at the annual meeting of Droitwich town council on Monday evening.

She said: "It can be life threatening. He has been an extremely lucky man. This is the second Deep Vein Thrombosis he's had which is very unusual."

Doctors do not know the cause of the clots but have suggested flying or his job as a washing machine engineer may be to blame.

Although Mr Spencer had not flown recently, he had returned from a trip to America when he suffered the first clot.

Mr Spencer, aged 59, has also been diagnosed with a constriction in his aorta which will require surgery.

He was first taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital on Monday, May 14 and returned home on Sunday, May 20 but remains under hospital care and Mrs Spencer said the next few days would be critical.

She added: "He wants to thank his consultant Professor Richard Lewis and his team who have been magnificent."

She also called described fantastic support from friends and councillors.

Until recently Mr Spencer was a member of Wychavon District Council and a Droitwich Town Councillor but did not stand at elections earlier this month because of ill health.
