A POST box in Worcester city centre was set on fire, destroying mail inside.

The red Victorian box, opposite Worcester Cathedral and outside the Bygones shop, was set alight in the early hours of Sunday.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Alec Mackie said: "We were called to the post box at 3.15am on Sunday. Someone must have put something inside which set it alight.

"We notified the Royal Mail but much of the contents were severely damaged or destroyed."

A spokesman for Royal Mail said they would be assessing all of the mail from the box to see if any was still deliverable, but anyone concerned about items of mail in the box can contact Royal Mail on 08457 740740.

Jane Thomas said: "We deplore any acts of violance on post boxes and take such things very seriously.

"We would appeal for anyone with information to contact the police."
