A ALCOHOL ban for troubled parts of a Worcester estate could soon be a reality, after winning the backing of police.

The ban would give police the power to confiscate alcohol and move drinkers away from parts of Warndon Villages.

Warndon parish councillor John Buckley hopes the whole scheme could be in place within three months, if Worcester City Council approves it.

The police have not yet submitted an application but the boundaries suggested would cover Lyppard Grange Primary School; Ankerage Green; Tesco Superstore; Vetch Field Avenue; Trotshill Lane East; parts of Mill Wood Drive, Otley Close and Threshfield Drive; play areas between Hoskyns Avenue and Dunmow Avenue and up to Dugdale Drive.

A spokesman for the police said the boundaries were not set in stone.

He said: "We agree with the scheme in principle. There are still debates about what areas should be involved."

Some of the buildings in Ankeragre Green near the Lyppard Grange Community Centre have already been fitted with anti-climb paint to stop yobs climbing on the roof.

Coun John Buckley has called for the ban to build on the momentum of a six-month dispersal order, which has now expired.

Under the terms of the order, any group causing intimidation, alarm, harassment or distress could have been be asked by police to leave for up to 24 hours. If they returned, gave a false name and address or refused to give details they can be arrested and prosecuted.

Youngsters under 16 can be taken home if they are not with a responsible adult between 9pm and 6am.

Coun Buckley said: "I'm disappointed the alcohol free zone wasn't in place when the dispersal order expired at the end of April. It sends out the message that you can start coming back to these areas with drink."

Catherine Hill, floor supervisor at Happylands Private Day Nursery, Ankerage Green, backed the ban. She said: "We have had a lot of vandalism going on and we're finding empty beer cans and cannabis spliffs. We are for the ban if stops the vandalism here. The last incident happened two weeks ago when £200 worth of bikes were stolen.

"Some of these problems have been going on for years. They even smoked cannabis in our wendy house."

A member of staff at Stars Convenience Store, who did not wish to be named, said: "We support a full ban."

Mike Foster MP also backs the calls for a ban and has written to the city council.
