PEOPLE in Worcestershire are being urged to make use of their pharmacist now winter has officially arrived.

Pharmacists are highly qualified health care professionals, training for five years to become experts in medicines and in giving health and wellbeing advice.

They can offer advice on coughs, colds and sore throats but many people are unaware of the services a modern pharmacist can offer

Most offer a consultation room so you don’t need to discuss your health concerns at the counter, and there is no need to book an appointment.

Pharmacies are also often open during evenings and at weekends and are easily accessible being located in rural areas, towns and supermarkets.

Dr Kiran Patel, medical director for NHS England West Midlands, said: "Your local pharmacy can help you with more than you might think.

"Pharmacists offer expert, confidential advice and treatment for many minor health problems.

"It’s been highly publicised that antibiotics don’t work on common coughs and colds but remedies to help ease the symptoms are available at all pharmacies.

"If you’re not sure what to take, they can help advise you, particularly if you’re already on medication.”
