MUSLIMS and Christians will come together in a show of solidarity in Worcester.

An "inclusive" community event has been organised by St Martin's Church in London Road, in association with the Worcester mosques and the Rotary Club of Worcester South.

It will take place at St Martin's Parish Centre in Victoria Avenue on Saturday (December 12) from 2pm to 4pm.

The idea emerged from conversations between the Rector of St Martin's, Canon Ken Boyce, and David Scott, president of the Rotary Club of Worcester South, who are both keen to develop relations with local Muslims, many of whom live in the parish of St Martin's.

David Scott said: "Back in the summer, people from the church were invited to join our Muslim neighbours at a Ramadan and peace picnic that they had organised in Fort Royal Park.

"We shared food and conversation and everyone went home having learnt something.

"We were delighted to meet leaders of the Muslim community and we agreed to organise a social event that we could share with them.

"Our Christmas peace and friendship party has been planned with representatives of the Worcester mosques and we're hoping to bring together people from all our communities, including our Italian and Eastern European neighbours."

The Party will be held in St Martin's Parish Centre, where tea, coffee and soft drinks will be provided, and people are taking cakes and savouries to share.

A team of play rangers from Kidz Play, run by Worcester Community Trust, will be on-hand to help the children make Christmas decorations for festival of Christmas trees.

Mr Scott added: "Christmas is a family time for people of many different traditions, not just Christians, and it's a good time to spread peace and friendship to all our neighbours."
