A CAMPAIGN to reduce the number of able-bodied shoppers leaving their cars in disabled parking bays in Worcester has worked.
In the five months since the Please Leave It For Someone Who Needs It campaign was launched, CrownGate Shopping Centre has noticed a 70 per cent increase in the availability of disabled parking bays. The campaign's success has been largely attributed to leaflets and reminders on the centre's PA system.
Centre manager Carolyn Mantle said: "As a centre, we have a legal obligation to not only provide these spaces, but also ensure they are available for those who need them at all times. Parents with children do not fall into this category and while our campaign is over, we'd ask them to continue to respect our disabled shoppers, and our staff."
Although the campaign has been a success, she said getting the message across has, at times, been difficult because shopping centre staff have been both verbally and physically abused by able-bodied shoppers.
