MORE than 500 people put on their walking boots and trekked across the Malvern Hills to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

It is hoped Saturday's event will raise about £26,000 for St Richard's Hospice, which recently moved into a new home in Worcester's Wildwood Drive, near County Hall.

Fund-raising assistant Joanna Street said the event was a huge success.

"It was excellent," she said.

"The day went really well.

"All of our walkers seemed to be very happy and the weather was mostly kind, which helped keep smiles on their faces.

"The hospice would like to thank every single person who took part, for the support they have given to help continue our work caring for patients with life-threatening illnesses and their families in south Worcestershire.

"We would also like to thank our volunteers, who made the day possible."

Walkers could trek 11 miles from the North Hills Quarry car park or opt for a shorter two or five mile route from the Blackhills car park.

Miss Street also thanked Mountain Shack, which sponsored the event, and helpers from Malvern Sea Cadets.

St Richard's Hospice cares for patients and families in south Worcestershire who are living with cancer and other life-threatening illness.

Each year. the team - made up of 110 dedicated nursing, medical and ancillary staff plus 700 volunteers - gives free care and support to about 1,600 patients and families, helping them towards the best quality of life possible.

This year the hospice must raise £3.2 million to continue its work.
