RIVERS are on the rise as Worcestershire braces itself for more flooding but the county is expected to suffer far less than northern parts of storm-battered Britain.

The Environment Agency has issued flood warnings for the Severn at Court Meadow, Kempsey and Callow End while there is also a flood alert for the River Avon between Salford Priors and Tewkesbury.

Herefordshire and Worcestershire Fire and Rescue Service were called to rescue a driver stuck in a ford at Walcott Lane, Pershore, this morning.

There were high winds throughout the day, and they were felt particularly keenly on the Malverns, as the video below by Duncan Monk shows.

However, Worcestershire has so far been spared the full wrath of Storm Desmond which is expected to batter Britain during the weekend.

At 4am today the level at the Kempsey Yacht Club Gauge was 6.05 metres and rising slowly.

A peak level of between 6 and 6.10 metres is expected to occur this morning.

The level at the Saxons Lode Gauge was 4.2 metres and rising slowly. A peak level of between 4.2 and 4.5 metres is expected to occur this morning.

However, Dave Throup sad ‘no problems’ were expected in Worcester.

Elsewhere in Britain, particularly in Scotland and northern England,  the weather is causing more disruption.

Roads have been closed throughout the North and Scotland as Storm Desmond caused road chaos, landslides and flooding.A jack-knifed FedEx lorry hit the central reservation on the M8 at Bathgate, West Lothian, closing lanes in both directions.

A landslide from a hill above Altura, in the Highlands, dumped at least 200 tonnes of debris on the A82 between Spean Bridge and Invergarry overnight.

A 15-mile (24km) stretch of the A82 was closed as a result of the landslide and several areas of flooding between Invergloy and Letter Finlay.

A geotechnical engineer was dispatched to gauge the safety of commencing a clear-up operation, and traffic was diverted via the A86 and A9.

Trunk road operator Bear Scotland's team were out throughout the night dealing with numerous issues of flooding, debris on the road and fallen trees across the North West.

Elsewhere, the M90 was closed between junctions 8 and 9 due to flooding near Glenfarg in Perthshire.

Meanwhile, the Forth Road Bridge remains closed until the new year for maintenance after structural faults were discovered last week.
