BARTON lock on the River Avon near Bidford-on-Avon has been temporarily closed.

The Avon Navigation Trust - the statutory navigational authority for the River Avon - has discovered a "critical failure" of one of the gates and has closed the lock for emergency repair work.

It is hoped the work will be completed by Friday, December 18, in time for the festive season.

Clive Matthews, general manager of the trust, said: "We have had a problem with the lock this season with a top gate leaking.

"A diver investigated the problem and we discovered a critical failure of the gate.

"The Avon is now not navigable which will affect small number of hardy canal boat users who travel at this time of year.

"But we will do everything we can to complete the repairs as quickly as possible."
