CAMPIAGNERS hoping to restore a Worcester church’s historic clock have organised a fundraising candlelit Christmas concert on Saturday (December 5) at 7.30pm.

St George's Church in Barbourne needs just £4,500 to complete its £15,000 appeal - and the church's friends group has invited the Volante Strings to perform at the church.

Music director Corinne Frost with violin soloist Shulah Oliver and guest composer Matthew Kelley are putting on a programme which includes Winter from The Seasons by Vivaldi; Cantabile by Paganini; Christmas Concerto by Corelli; Music from The Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky; Sleigh Ride by Anderson and The Snowman Suite by Blake.

Michael Silvey, chairman of the Friends of St George's, said: “It is an excellent line-up and should be a very entertaining evening."

Tickets cost £10 including seasonal refreshments for adults while children under-14 can attend free.

Experts had told St George’s Parochial Church Council that the 24-inch and 3cwt 1830 clock chamber bell, which stopped working more than a year ago, needs a complete overhaul, the face re-gilded and an automatic winding and auto regulation system installed.

Supporters aim to raise the raise the funds by individual donations, grants and through the Just a Minute idea whereby people sponsor a minute on the clock for a minimum donation of £10.
