STOURPORT Bridge will not be closed this weekend.

Engineers had planned to close the bridge on Saturday and Sunday while refurbishment work was carried out by contractors.

However, because great progress has been made during the last few weeks, the bridge will be open as normal.

Senior bridge engineer Richard Attwood said: "Obviously we have to deal in worst case scenarios because we don't want to build people's hopes up. So we anticipated the bridge would be closed this weekend and advised residents, commuters and traders accordingly.

"As it is, the contractors have made real progress and it will be open this coming weekend."

Worcestershire County Council will now begin work on the third phase of its refurbishment of the bridge next week.

A leaflet is soon to be distributed to residents and businesses in Stourport-on-Seven outlining what work has taken place so far and what will happen in the future.
