FIREFIGHTERS from across Worcestershire were called to a water plant after reports of a chlorine gas leak.

Crews from Worcester, Upton-upon-Severn, and Pershore were joined by specialist appliances from Droitwich, Malvern and Evesham at Stensham Water Works in Mill Lane, Strensham at 8.10 last night.

Spokesman for Severn Trent Vicky Phillips said: "It is routine that the fire service are automatically called when a leak occurs. Fortunately this was a very small leak which was quickly dealt with. There was no danger to the public or the water as the leak was very small indeed."

Miss Phillips said chlorine was used to treat water at the plant.

She added: "Our engineers are now investigating the cause of the leak."

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Alec Mackie said firefighter wearing decontamination suits assisted Severn Trent staff to contain the leak and ventilate the building.

He said: "We carried out remote ventilation of the building to reduce chlorine levels and left the scene at about 10.40pm."
