RIK Mayall was unable to perform at Malvern Theatres last night due to illness.

The comedian, who grew up in Droitwich and attended the King's School, Worcester, is suffering with flu but is due to be back on stage tonight.

Since his show, The New Statesman, began its run at the theatre in Grange Road, Malvern, on Monday, it was clear to the audience Mayall was unwell.

It was confirmed that he would miss yesterday's show just before 5pm. An understudy took his place.

The New Statesman sees Mayall reprise his role as the slimy and deceitful politician Alan B'Stard.

On Tuesday, the star took to the streets of Malvern in character, stunning local people who either found his comedy routine hilarious or completely bewildering.

The New Statesman sees B'Stard, a former Tory, now a shining star of the New Labour regime who spends most of his time trying to convince Condoleezza Rice to let him join the exclusive Trillionaires Club.

It runs at Malvern until tomorrow night. To check whether Mayall is performing call the box office 01684 892277.
