A DROITWICH man known to suffer from alcoholism and health problems died after severely breaking his ankle while at home.

An inquest into the death of Michael Graham, aged 58, was told he was found collapsed in his bathroom by police after a neighbour raised the alarm.

Deputy coroner Geraint Williams said Mr Graham, of Bay's Meadow, was a known alcoholic with a history of drinking, depression and hospital admissions who also suffered from angina and diabetes.

A neighbour called the police on Friday, February 9, after becoming concerned that he had not seen Mr Graham, a cleaner, for some time.

Officers found him in the bathroom with blood on his face and a vodka bottle nearby.

A post-mortem examination discovered he had bled to death after the pain and stress of a fracture dislocation to his ankle was so great that it had led to the formation of ulcers.

He died sometime before 3.30pm on the day he was discovered by police. The hearing was not told how long before his death Mr Graham had broken his ankle.

Delivering a narrative verdict, where the facts surrounding the case are stated, Mr Williams said: "A man with significant alcohol problems and other medical conditions sustained a significant broken ankle.

"It is not clear how that injury occurred but that broken ankle would have caused him considerable pain and would have given rise to stress and ulceration."
