A DRUNKEN man rammed a shopping trolley into a police car, putting a dent in it.

Sam Knott admitted slamming a trolley into the side of a police car in Love's Grove, off Castle Street, Worcester, causing £300 damage.

He was charged with criminal damage following the incident, which took place yards from Worcester police station on June 24 last year and was captured on CCTV.

Lesley Ashton, prosecuting, said: "Police officers observed Mr Knott pushing a shopping trolley. The officers were in a van at the time.

"He approached the vehicle, clearly under the influence of alcohol, and was staggering about from side to side with the shopping trolley in front of him.

"He turned and rammed the trolley into the side of the police car, causing a dent over the wheel arch.

"He said in interview that he had moved the trolley out of the road, pushing it towards the police station to take it out of the way of any passing motorists. He said he didn't see the police vehicle until it was alongside him."

Knott, aged 28, of Sebright Avenue, off London Road, Worcester, also admitted a charge of being drunk and disorderly when he swore at a police officer on December 23 last year after drinking seven pints of lager and three double whiskies.

He was also caught in possession of amphetamines on Monday, April 23, which he said were for his own personal use and admitted Bail Act offences, having failed to turn up at court on December 11 last year, and on Friday, February 9, and Monday, April 2, this year.

Knott was not able to get bail because he had already made two failed applications and, under the law, was not allowed to apply again, despite the efforts of his defence solicitor Liane Atcheson.

He was remanded in custody until Wednesday, June 6, for a pre-sentence report.

The prosecution applied for costs of £70 and compensation of £307 for the damage to the police car.
