WORCESTER'S first ever motor show is just days away and car dealers are frantically getting ready for the big event.

Some of the biggest car manufacturers will show off their models on the city's streets on Saturday and give people the chance to see the latest vehicles while out shopping.

The event, which will be opened by Worcester's new Mayor Stephen Inman at 10.30am at the Guildhall, will be the first of its kind, bringing the car showroom to the High Street, Running from 9am to 5pm in the High Street, Crowngate and Cathedral Plaza shopping centres, the day is a joint effort between the former Worcester City Centre Forum, Worcester City Council's tourism department - now named VisitWorcester - and the Worcester News.

Kingsley Swaine, new car sales manager at St Peter's Peugeot, said it was looking forward to the event, especially as it was in the city centre.

He said: "It will be good to have our new products to view on the day right in the centre and on the high street. We are going to have two vehicles on display along with a full-size Peugeot rally car simulator, and will be giving away prizes."

Graham George, general manager of Mercedes-Benz of Worcester, said the firm had once had a display in CrownGate which attracted a lot of attention - and this time its cars would be on the High Street, which would be a prime position.

"The day will let people have the chance to see the cars closer up and find out that owning a Mercedes is more affordable then they think," he said.

Dave Allen, of Brooklyn Ford and Toyota, said he thought it was a good idea that the dealers, council and local newspaper could put on such a big event.

He said: "We are now taking our retail area from the forecourt to the High Street, which will be a great experience and make the centre of Worcester a great place to be on the day.

"It is going to be beneficial not only to us and the other dealers but also to other businesses in the area.

Peter Hughes, City and County Suzuki and Dodge general sales manager, said the firm would be delighted to be able to support the first Worcester Motor Show, and would be displaying some of its new product ranges.

He said: "As we are a family-run dealership in the city that has been trading from Worcester for over 50 years, it will be good to get into the centre and meet the shoppers.

"We wish the show the best of luck."

Dealerships showing their cars include:

* Bicknells Vauxhall * Brooklyn Ford and Toyota * City and County Suzuki and Dodge * Edwards Daihatsu, Kia, Mazda and Mitsubishi * Hatfields Jaguar Worcester * Johnsons Volvo * Mercedes-Benz of Worcester * Robert Stern BMW and Mini * Startin Honda and Skoda * St Peter's Peugeot * Warwickshire Proton and Ssangyong.

Other firms who will be showing their wares at the motor show are Professional Car Cleaning, on hand to discuss how to keep your new vehicle's paintwork in top condition, and, for drivers who lack confidence in their driving ability, Worcestershire Advanced Driving Group, who will discuss how they can help you improve your skills.

Worcester News events manager Sara Matthews said: "Look out for fantastic giveaways and goodie bags at the Worcester News stands in the High Street."
