A PROLIFIC Evesham thief raided cars and even a hospital to fund his drug habit.

Christopher Spiers left bed clothes in Evesham Community Hospital caked in mud as he ransacked a room after climbing in through an open window.

He stole a laptop and a mobile phone charger during the theft on Monday, April 23.

The 26-year-old of Churchill Road, Sedgeberrow, Evesham, also admitted four charges of theft from cars and his defence solicitor also asked the court to take into account 32 other matters.

Syma Akhtar, prosecuting, describing the hospital theft, said: "He entered the window by an open groundfloor window and began an untidy search, leaving bed clothes covered in mud."

The court heard how Spiers broke into a BMW and took a Blackberry mobile phone worth £250.

He also broke into Volkswagen Passat, stealing a £190 Prada handbag, 70 CDs worth £150 and four pairs of shoes worth £40.

He also had 29 previous convictions for theft between 2000 and 2006 Nick Roberts, defending, said: "The offending appears to have been motivated by a continuing issue with class A drugs. Custody is justifiable but the prisons are full.

"Prior to incarceration he had access to a methadone subscription from his local medical centre but it did not come soon enough for the offending to stop."

Magistrates told Spiers that their powers of sentencing were insufficient as the maximum sentence they could hand out was for 12 months.

He was remanded in custody until the crown court hearing on Friday, June 15.
