WORCESTER gardeners, cooks and photographers are being urged to enter a big flower show this summer.

Anyone who can grow the longest bean in the city, cook a mouth-watering fruit pie or even take a classy snap of a local landmark is being sought as a contender for the show.

Worcester Flower Show, now in its second year, will take place on Saturday, August 18, in Cripplegate Park.

Organisers are calling on potential entrants to start preparing now.

Event co-ordinator Linda Ohlson said: "The competition part of the show has six categories - floral, fruit and vegetables, cakes and preserves, handicraft, photography, and a children's section.

"Enthusiasm is more important than talent.

"I'm really looking forward to the day and am confident we can present the wonderful diversity of form and colour that abounds across the city."

The show is organised by Worcester City Council and Friends of Cripplegate Park, and will feature live music and dance events alongside the displays of flowers, fruit and vegetables.

As an added feature this year, visitors will have the chance to learn more about composting and recycling.

An expert team from the city council will be on hand to give guidance on how to make the best of the wheelie bin recycling scheme.

The event is being sponsored by Cawley Estate Agents in St John's, who decided to get involved after sponsoring a roundabout as part of the Worcester in Bloom project.

The firm's owner Simon Cawley said: "It is events such as the flower show that add to the vibe of the city and make it such a great place to live for everyone from singles through to couples, families and elderly residents."

More information on the event, which is free to attend, is available on 01905 722233.
