Selected students were invited to spend some time chatting informally with the author in the Library. Dean had copies of his novels that had been published in other countries, Denmark, Germany and Russia.

The artwork on the covers was all different, but based around the theme of the mosquito. He said that as he still worked full time he wrote in his spare time; if he had the chance he could get half a book written in two days. He used to write by hand and make lots of markings before typing it up.

Now he just writes straight onto the computer. He has two books in print; a third was more of an adult book and has been put to one side. The fourth book he is working on is loosely based on things that happened to him at school, but given a horror' type twist. Dean used to work in Hammicks bookshop in Worcester and now works in the postroom at a publishers in London.

Dean seemed like a normal sort of person, not a celebrity. He was easy to talk to and that made the questions and answers easy to take part in. He didn't read from his books, which is unusual.

I would recommend that you go to an event like this if you get the chance. It was good to be able to chat to an author in a small group, rather than just be talked to.
