The atmosphere is rarely still, pressure winds moves around our globe, constantly moving and changing it's characteristic and moods. Winds can be light and blissful, or strong, squally and destructive.
Winds can be extremely local and influenced by obstructions and topography. They funnel between tall buildings creating sudden gusts and eddies, these swirling winds collect dust and light objects such as twigs and paper within their circulation, these clearly seen within our towns and city centre's.Within our own gardens, we can influence and change the climate to a certain degree, by planting tall trees or bushes on one side of the garden will ease or protect it from the prevailing wind direction. By planting medium size bushes around an area of the garden will create heat traps, whilst diverting the strongest gusts of wind around the area.Farmers and growers, especially those with glasshouses, often plant popular trees to one side of their nursery to fend off the strongest damaging winds through the winter months, popular trees are tall and slender and makes perfect wind breaks. In numerous locations the shape of the land creates distinctive local winds, in coastal regions local winds are created by the warming and cooling of land and sea. Rising and sinking air from mountains and hill ranges are "anabatic " and "katabatic winds. When air warms by compression as it sinks, it becomes a Fohn wind. Another well known local wind is the Mistral, a cold katabatic wind funnelled along the Rhone Valley in France.Next Week............Local Winds of the World Part 1.The answer to last weeks question......Rotation of the Earth. This week's question is:
