A RETIRED teacher from Worcestershire has won a commendation for writing a short story.
John Bakewell, aged 69, of Tibberton, near Droitwich, entered his story, Josef's Sister, in the Blinking Eye short story competition.
Judging the contest was the acclaimed novelist and short story writer Hilary Mantel who said Mr Bake-well's story was "a brave attempt to tackle a dark and difficult subject, with some flashes of cinematic vividness, and writing throughout of a high quality."
Mr Bakewell has been writing for many years and in 2003 self-published his novel, At The Water's Edge.
The winner of the Blinking Eye short story competition was Carolyn Kirk from Uppingham in Rutland.
