A WORCESTER man who stole a DVD and drove a car without a licence and insurance was told he had made an "expensive" mistake.

Sam Dillingham stole a DVD worth £12.75 from Tesco but was told by deputy district judge Ian Strongman "It will be an expensive DVD" before he slapped him with a £100 fine. He was also banned from driving, unless he is with a qualified instructor, until he passes his test.

The 18-year-old from Tolla-dine Road, Worcester, was caught behind the wheel of a friend's blue Ford Fiesta in Mill Wood Drive, Warndon Villages, on Saturday, March 24. Dillingham admitted theft, driving without a full licence and driving without insurance when he apeared at Worcester Magistrates Court yesterday.

Chris Hilton, defending, said the charges, which all happened on the same day, were sparked after Dillingham had a row with his girlfriend. "He was feeling depressed. It was a spur of the moment decision to take the DVD."

Deputy district judge Ian Strongman said: "The description of his driving without lights and drifting on to the kerb when he was stopped gives me reason to believe he's not a competent driver."

He fined him £100 for theft, £50 for driving otherwise than in accordance with a driving licence and given eight penalty points.
