Sunday heralds the start of British Sandwich Week and, to celebrate, we have put some of Worcester's most popular food stores to the test. Lauren Murray gave her verdict on Britain's most popular choice.

Clockwatchers

WHERE: Mealcheapen Street, Worcester.

HOW MUCH: £2.40 (take away).

TASTE TEST: Next to some of the more exotic options on the menu board, the roast chicken and salad sandwich looked dull. Fortunately, there is something about a sandwich made freshly in front of you. The granary bread was delicious and I appreciated having the choice of salad - however the chicken was dry. Next time I'll have mayonnaise. And the lettuce was so dire I picked most of it out.

RATING: **

French Connection

WHERE: The Cross, Worcester.

HOW MUCH: £1.49.

TASTE TEST: This sandwich looked hearty and homemade. It was stuffed with so much chicken and salad most of it fell out. The wholemeal bread was soft and lightly buttered, quite thick too. There was no sauce but I hardly noticed because the chicken was really succulent. The salad was fresh; crunchy lettuce and juicy tomatoes. If anything there was too much of this near-perfect sandwich.

RATING: ****

Tilley's

WHERE: Lowesmoor, Worcester.

HOW MUCH: £2.05.

TASTE TEST: The bread was soft white, extremely light and had just enough butter on it. Although the salad could have been fresher, I'm glad I had the choice, and the large tomato slices were flavoursome and juicy. While most of the chicken pieces were succulent, one or two were dry, which was a shame because it was overall a very tasty sandwich.

RATING: ****

Gregg's

WHERE: High Street, Worcester.

HOW MUCH: £1.30.

TASTE TEST: The freshly-made but pre-packed chicken salad sandwich looked the least appetizing out of the bunch. However, the bread was incredibily soft and light and the chicken pieces were perfect. The salad was not brilliant - the tomato was too sloppy, the cucumber totally missing from one half and the sprinkling of lettuce disappointing, but I did not feel the need for a packet of crisps or chocolate.

RATING: **

Berry's

WHERE: St John's, Worcester.

HOW MUCH: £1.80.

TASTE TEST: With eight different chicken sandwiches on offer - from plain to Caribbean - you are spoilt for choice at Berry's. The thick bread looked great, it was heavy but not too dense. The chicken pieces were just the right size, but they were a little dry so I decided to opt for mayonnaise. While there could have been more salad, it was crunchy and fresh.

RATING: ***

Panini's

WHERE: Friar Street, Worcester.

HOW MUCH: £2.30.

TASTE TEST: Another wide choice on offer. The chargrilled chicken was delicious - full of flavour and there was plenty of it. The wholemeal bread, lightly buttered, could have been softer and, although there wasn't much salad to talk of, it was fresh. Worth noting was the outstanding standard of service in the shop.
