A BROOK may have been contaminated by engine oil deliberately, say the Environment Agency.
Blakedown Brook in Broadwaters Park, Kidderminster, was found to be covered with an oil slick along 200 metres of its length.
EA officers arrived at the scene at 8.30am on Tuesday, May 8 following a call from a member of the public.
They put barriers up and used oil absorbent pads to reduce the effects but had to call in emergency specialist contractors to clear it up, stopping the oil reaching the river Stour.
The source of the estimated 45 gallons of oil is not known but Amy Currie, the EA officer in charge of managing the incident, said there was a suspicion it was poured in on purpose.
There are waste engine oil to oil banks at either Bonemill or Hoobrook household waste sites where waste oil can be disposed of without damaging the environment.
The incident was contained quickly because someone called the Environment Agency free Emergency Hotline on 0800 807060.
