A WORCESTER teacher who survived a horrific car crash was the guest of honour at a special fund-raising dance at his school for the rescue charity that helped saved his life.
Robert Young, aged 29, of St Peter's and head of IT at Walkwood Middle School, Redditch, was helped by a member of the Mercia Accident Rescue Service (MARS) after the accident on the Droitwich to Hanbury Road last October when his Ford Ka was in collision with a green Toyota Landcruiser.
A dance and raffle at the school, organised by Mr Young's girlfriend Louise Pritchard along with Adele Bott and Nick Roberts, raised £4,500 for MARS.
The Collective Soul Band entertained a packed house and Mr Young drew the raffle.
Assistant headteacher Bob James said it was not yet clear when Mr Young would be back at the school as he was still having treatment to help him recover, particularly speech therapy.
"He's making good progress but it's slow," he told the audience at the event.
He thanked everyone who supported the raffle and donated prizes, including Halfords, which donated the top prize of a mountain bike.
Mr Young fought for his life after the accident, which left him in a coma with head injuries, a broken pelvis and ribs and a punctured lung.
A doctor from MARS heard about the crash while driving down the M5 and helped save the teacher by being first at the scene and administering emergency treatment until paramedics arrived.
