PUPILS from a Worcester school slept in the shadow of an active volcano and wandered windswept Iceland on a voyage of discovery.
The 15 students from St Mary's Convent School, Mount Battenhall, Worcester, discovered the mysteries and geological marvels of the land of fire and ice on their adventure.
Youngsters took a dip in the thermal spa pool at the Blue Lagoon, journeyed to Hvolsvollur and visited Krisuvik and Kerid to admire the hot springs and volcanic crater.
The children visited Hvolsvollur Farm where they read grim evacuation instructions in the event of a volcanic eruption by the nearby Katla volcano.
They boarded a short flight by light aircraft to the Vestmannejar Islands, visiting Heimaey volcano which caused such devastation to the nearby town in 1973.
In the afternoon, the party took a hike to the Solheimurjokull glacier and investigated the ice caves.
Pupils visited Reynshverfi, saw basalt columns, caves and stacks and visited the village of Skogar, the Skogarfoss falls, the Folk Museum, the Golden Circle, the Gulfoss waterfall and Geysir, home of the hot springs and geysers.
The final afternoon was spent shopping in Reykjavik.
