A LEADING Worcester city councillor who first campaigned for a pedestrian crossing on a Worcester road four years ago said it "beggars belief" she is still waiting.

Coun Pam Clayton wants to see a crossing installed in Windermere Drive, Warndon, to help make it safer.

As the Worcester News reported at the time, a 20-year-old was killed when she tried to cross the road in Warndon.

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's is planning to install a crossing as part of a plan to relocate its Windermere Drive store, but campaigners say it should have happened a long time ago.

Coun Clayton said: "I remember starting a petition four years ago, and got at least a couple of hundred signatures from Warndon residents.

"Everywhere I went people were saying, We want a pedestrian crossing'. I've been aware of the dangers of that road for years.

"I remember a boy going to take his GSCEs getting knocked down when he tried to walk across the road with his bicycle.

"The councillors and residents here have tried every which way to get a crossing installed, and it beggers belief that we are still waiting.

"I'm enraged by the wait, because we spelt out the dangers of this road many times. That death was a life wasted."

Sainsbury's has already confirmed it will create a crossing as soon as it gets permission to relocate the store next door to the former Archdales site.

It told the Worcester News this week it is finalising the paperwork to hand to the Guildhall before approval can be granted, and is hopeful it can start work this summer.

The deal has been delayed for 18 months because Sainsbury's had to negotiate the terms of a section 106 agreement - whereby developers pay for community projects.

County Hall will not pay for a pedestrian crossing because Sainsbury's already has plans to do so.
